When land is used to raise animals instead of crops, valuable water and soil are wasted, trees are cut down to make room for grazing or factory farm sheds, and rivers and streams are contaminated by animal waste that hasn't been cleaned up. In fact, eating meat is so bad for the environment as a whole that the Union of Concerned Scientists lists it as one of the most dangerous things for the environment. Globally, animal farming creates more greenhouse gases than all of the world's transportation systems put together. No wonder, when you think about things like:

*A cow needs to eat 16 pounds of plants in order to turn 1 pound of plants into 1 pound of meat. More than half of all the water used in the U.S. is used to raise animals for food. A pound of meat needs 2,500 gallons of water to grow, but a pound of wheat only needs 25 gallons.

*The fossil fuel used to make just one hamburger is enough to drive a small car 20 miles. More than one-third of all the raw materials and fossil fuels used in the U.S. are used to raise animals for food.

*A typical pig farm makes as much raw trash as a city with 12,000 people.

*In the U.S., 87 percent of the land used for farming is used to raise animals for food. That is 45 percent of all the land in the United States. About 260 million acres of forest in the U.S. have been cut down to make room for crops that feed animals that are raised for food. 85 percent of all soil erosion in the U.S. can be traced back to the meat industry. Imagine the condition of India. As India is the 4th largest beef exporter.

*More than 80% of the corn we grow and 95% of the oats we grow are fed to animals. Just the world's cattle eat enough food to meet the energy needs of 8.7 billion people. This is more than the total number of people on Earth.

And who is responsible for the quality check?
