This is a Soviet-era computer memory chip from the 1960s–70s, and it could store just 4,096 bits of data—that’s about half a kilobyte. By today’s standards, that’s incredibly small. Your smartphone holds millions of times more memory without you even noticing.

Each tiny ring you see is a magnetic core, and every single one stores just one bit of information. These cores were arranged in a 64 × 64 grid, and engineers would stack multiple grids together to increase storage capacity.
