🦎 The Mourning Gecko (Lepidodactylus lugubris) is a fascinating reptile with an extraordinary ability to reproduce without males. These small geckos are parthenogenetic, meaning all populations consist entirely of females who can produce offspring independently. Native to the Indo-Australian Archipelago and Pacific islands, they have an impressively vast geographic range that spans multiple continents.

These adaptable creatures thrive in diverse habitats, from lowland rainforests and mangrove forests to urban gardens and human dwellings. Despite being primarily nocturnal, mourning geckos are known to be somewhat active during daylight hours in captivity. They are exceptional climbers, spending most of their time high up in trees, and can be found in locations as varied as palm leaf axils, behind tree bark, and even in rock crevices.

Mourning geckos are omnivorous, with a diet that includes insects, spiders, amphipods, pill bugs, fruit, nectar, and pollen. Interestingly, they are so adaptable that they will even consume their own eggs and, if given the opportunity, will eat sweet foods like jam and sweetened drinks. Their remarkable ability to colonize new environments has led to their introduction in numerous regions, including parts of the Neotropics, Hawaii, and the Seychelles, making them one of the most widespread gecko species in the world.
