In 1571, the Zamorin’s ground forces and Kunjali Marakkar’s naval fleet jointly waged a major war against the Portuguese at the Chaliyam Fort. In this battle, which shook the foundations of Portuguese dominance, they achieved victory by completely destroying the fort.

According to historians, the timber obtained from the demolished fort in this war was used by the Zamorin, Kunjali Marakkar, and the Muslims together to reconstruct the damages of the Mishkal Mosque, which the Portuguese had set on fire 60 years earlier.
