On Wednesday 25th February, I attended The Re-Claim Project invited by Eugene Ankomah — and it was one of the most powerful immersive art installations I’ve ever experienced.

This wasn’t just art. It was truth. It was grief. It was our streets.

The experience was divided into three stages. It began with young people dressed in full PPE and Tyvek suits — reminiscent of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation — greeting us silently and handing out flowers. That image alone said everything: our youth forced into the role of crime scene responders in their own communities.

Then came the “incident trail.”
Clues. Silence. Tension.
A forensic tent, fully zipped — symbolising safety, shelter, dignity for the life lost.

As we moved into the second stage, the space transformed. The sounds shifted into the chaos of the street — sirens, police cars, parents’ anguish, bystanders’ cries. A runway formed. Young people walked slowly toward the tent. The atmosphere was heavy. Real.

Finally, behind police tape, we were allowed to look inside a casket. It felt like a funeral. Because for too many families, this is reality.

What made it even more powerful was the involvement of those directly affected by knife crime — mothers, friends, and survivors carrying both visible and invisible scars. Trigger warnings were placed throughout, and psychotherapists were on hand, recognising the weight of what was being confronted.

This installation doesn’t sensationalise. It dignifies. It humanises. It forces us to sit with the devastation knife crime causes on our streets.

Art has the power to reclaim narratives.
This project does exactly that.
