☀️ Daylight Hustle in Saigon

As Facebook keeps reminding me, this time last year I was deep in Ho Chi Minh — solo traveler, camera slung, sweating through the streets where the sun doesn’t let you hide. Some people fear being alone. For me, solitude isn’t punishment — it’s a compass.

That’s when I crossed paths with the Filipino card gang. Daylight smiles, casual chatter, the kind of warmth that feels like relief from the heat. Until it wasn’t. That’s when it hit me: I wasn’t a guest in their game, I was the mark.

Curiosity kept me there longer than sense should’ve, but instinct pulled me out. I spotted the gap, took it clean, and walked away with nothing lost but a sliver of naivety — and a story burning in my back pocket.

So I shared it online. Not for pity. Not for likes. Just to warn others that these hustles happen in plain sight, even to the ones paying attention.

And of course — the mob came running.
“Cool story bro, add dragons.”
“How stupid can you be?”
The usual desk warriors, puffed up behind their screens, mistaking hindsight for wisdom.

But behind the noise, my inbox filled. Solo travelers — just like me — who’d been hit, almost hit, or literally approached that same week. Too nervous to go public, but grateful someone had the guts to speak.

That’s the lesson: the crowd loves to mock the messenger, but the quiet ones are listening. So maybe next time you feel like sneering, remember — some of us take the daylight hits so you don’t have to.
