“What Remains” -From my ‘Inscriptions of a Dreamed Existence’ series, exhibited as part of Hiromita Project’s installations this year.

“What Remains” 2024
106 x 80 cm, Mixed Media on Canvas

Like a guardian of wishes, “What Remains” watched over visitors as they tied their hopes and dreams during the art fair.

Within its layers live what endures from my childhood drawings - a house and flowers I painted/collaged when I was small - now intertwined with ancient Chinese characters for ‘dream’ (梦/夢 / meng), inscribed the way those who carved on oracle bones did thousands of years ago.

As people tied their wishes nearby, I thought about how we all seek to capture something beyond words - just like those in Ancient China who inscribed on oracle bones and dreamed of encoding the ineffable into symbols.

The house speaks to my seeking of belonging, the flowers what wants to be born from the heart - blooming dreams. The ancient character for ‘dream’ (meng) has appeared in my work regularly. Ever since my mother gave me a word card over 30 years ago showing how to write it when I was learning Chinese in Taiwan - a word that expressed what I could grasp and what stayed elusive, like a dream itself.

In this moment, watching wishes being made, my painting felt like a bridge between past and present, between the dreams of a child, the desire of an artist to recollect and rebuild the past and the hopes of everyone who paused to make a wish.
