‘Stick Talk’ Future (2015)

“Stick Talk” was released on July 17, 2015, as part of Future’s landmark mixtape DS2 (Dirty Sprite 2) on Freebandz/Epic Records, the project widely credited with cementing Future as one of the most influential trap artists in Atlanta hip hop history. Produced by Southside, one of the key architects of the modern trap sound, the track uses a dark, minimalist instrumental built around heavy 808s and layered synths that became a blueprint for the wave of melodic trap production that dominated hip hop throughout the late 2010s.

Future leans fully into street life imagery, referencing weapons, codeine culture, and his rise from Atlanta’s Kirkwood neighborhood into a multi million dollar rap career, all delivered in the signature autotuned vocal style that separated him from every other artist in the trap rap space. The official music video dropped October 29, 2015, and the record peaked at number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100, but its cultural impact far exceeded its chart position, “Stick Talk” became one of the most referenced and freestyled over records of the decade, with artists consistently returning to the instrumental as a benchmark for raw, street driven Atlanta rap.
