‘Neva End’ Future ft. Kelly Rowland (2012)

“Neva End” originally appeared on Future’s debut studio album Pluto, released April 17, 2012 via Freebandz and Epic Records, before being remixed with a Kelly Rowland feature and released as the lead single for Pluto 3D, the deluxe repackage that dropped November 27, 2012.  Produced by Mike Will Made It with co-production from Pierre “P-Nasty” Slaughter, the beat sits on a glassy, melodic synth loop that strips away the trap aggression Future was simultaneously building his street reputation on, leaning into a softer, emotionally open atmosphere that showed the full range of what he could do as an artist beyond bangers.  The original is essentially Future pleading his case over a relationship, but Kelly Rowland’s remix verse adds the other side of the story, with her singing about being played and still staying, adding a real tension to the record that the solo version didn’t carry.

The remix video, directed by Erik White and premiering on BET November 21, 2012, was shot at Madonna’s former mansion in the Hollywood Hills, with Evelyn Lozada’s daughter Shaniece Hairston playing Future’s love interest onscreen while Kelly plays the background as the woman caught in the situation.  The single peaked at No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100, spending 20 weeks on the chart, and also hit No. 14 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and No. 11 on Hot Rap Songs, making it Future’s most commercially successful single at that point in his career.  Future and Kelly Rowland performed the record together live on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on November 27, 2012, one of the most memorable early TV moments of Future’s come-up before Honest and DS2 fully established who he would become.
