‘Thug Cry’ Rick Ross ft. Lil Wayne (2014)

“Thug Cry” released on March 13, 2014, as the third and final official single from Rick Ross’s sixth studio album Mastermind via Maybach Music Group, Slip-n-Slide, and Def Jam.  Produced by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, the track is built on a high-fidelity, orchestral-style production featuring live instrumentation and a prominent piano loop, while the uncredited soulful vocals on the hook are performed by Betty Idol.  The record serves as a centerpiece for the Mastermind project, capturing Ross and Lil Wayne in a rare, introspective mode where they detail the psychological weight of the street lifestyle and the losses that come with rising to the top of the industry.

The official music video, directed by Dre Films and released on May 5, 2014, is a six-minute cinematic short film starring actor Wood Harris, best known for his roles in The Wire and Paid in Full.  The visual follows a narrative of a man being released from prison after serving a long sentence, using flashbacks to show the decisions that landed him there and ending with Ross and Yo Gotti welcoming him home with a new Rolls-Royce.
