‘Body Language’ Kid Ink ft. Usher (2014)

“Body Language” dropped September 9, 2014, as the lead single from Kid Ink’s third studio album Full Speed, released through RCA Records, Tha Alumni Music Group, and 88 Classic.  Produced by Cashmere Cat with a melody developed by Stargate, the track features guest appearances from fellow RCA labelmates Usher and Tinashe, blending bouncy electro-R&B production with the same pop-leaning rap energy that made Ink’s previous hit “Show Me” a radio staple.  The beat is built on staccato, xylophone-like synths and a rubbery bassline, creating a minimal but high-energy backdrop for Usher to handle the primary hook while Tinashe provides background vocals and additional R&B texture.  Kid Ink wrote the female vocal part specifically with Tinashe in mind, having already shared the same creative circles and label space before sending the track over to Usher’s team for the final addition.

The official music video was directed by Darren Craig and released on October 27, 2014, featuring all three artists in a visually driven club setting that emphasized the song’s focus on physical chemistry and late-night movement.  Commercially, “Body Language” peaked at number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 but performed much stronger on specialized charts, reaching number 6 on the US Rhythmic chart and number 21 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.  It remains one of Kid Ink’s most recognizable singles from the Full Speed era, helping the album debut at number 14 on the Billboard 200 upon its release in January 2015.  The record also gained significant international traction, charting in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Scotland, confirming Ink’s crossover appeal beyond the domestic rap market during the mid-2010s.
