“Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)” dropped May 19, 2003, as the lead single from Ashanti’s sophomore album Chapter II, released through Murder Inc. and Def Jam Records — and it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it her third consecutive top-10 solo hit following “Foolish” and “Always on Time.” Written by Ashanti alongside Irv Gotti and Chink Santana, who also handled production, the record sits on a gentle, slow-bouncing R&B groove that’s barely more than a whisper instrumentally — leaving all the space for Ashanti’s vocals, which float between breathy and melodic in a way that felt distinctly hers during the Murder Inc. era.
