‘Turnpike Ike’ Rick Ross (2019)

“Turnpike Ike” was released on August 6, 2019, as the final promotional single for Rick Ross’s tenth studio album Port of Miami 2, which arrived three days later on August 9, 2019, via Maybach Music Group and Epic Records. The track was produced by Jake One and features a prominent sample of the 1978 soul song Help (Somebody Please) by The O’Jays, providing the luxurious, soulful atmosphere that serves as a cornerstone for Ross’s more introspective storytelling. Lyrically, the song is a direct nod to the Florida Turnpike, where Ross spent his earlier years hustling, and he uses the record to contrast those street origins with his current status as a multimillionaire business mogul.

The official music video, which also released on August 9, 2019 to coincide with the album launch, was directed by Tami Reiker and features Rick Ross in various high-end Miami settings, emphasizing the album’s theme of returning to his roots while showcasing his elevated lifestyle. While Port of Miami 2 is packed with high-profile guest features, “Turnpike Ike” is one of only a few solo tracks on the project, allowing Ross to lead with his own narrative and sharp lyricism. The song was well-received by fans and critics alike, often cited as a standout for its classic MMG sound and its successful execution of the sequel concept to his 2006 debut.
