‘Melo’ Lil Snupe (2013)

“Melo” dropped April 2013 as a standout single from Lil Snupe’s debut mixtape R.N.I.C. (Real N***a In Charge), released through Meek Mill’s Dream Chasers Records just two months before Snupe’s tragic death. Produced by Julian Beatz, the track is built on a soulful, slowed-down sample of Philip Bailey’s 1983 song Children of the Ghetto, which provides a nostalgic R&B backdrop that contrasts with Snupe’s high-octane, aggressive delivery. Snupe uses the record to bridge the gap between his small-town Louisiana roots and his rapid ascent in the industry, rapping with the hunger of a 17-year-old who had just handed Meek Mill a demo through a van window at Grambling University and changed his life in 20 minutes.

The official music video, directed by David Ricks and produced by South9 Entertainment, was released on April 22, 2013, showing Snupe back in his element, surrounded by his crew and leaning into the local support that powered his movement before the world caught on. The song remains a cult classic in the Dream Chasers catalog and served as a foundational piece for the R.N.I.C. project, which also featured DJ Khaled, Curren$y, and Trae Tha Truth. Although his career was cut short just seven days after his 18th birthday in June 2013, “Melo” continues to rack up millions of views and streams as a reminder of the raw talent and self-determination that made Snupe one of the most promising stars of the early 2010s.
