‘Blue Notes’ Meek Mill (2016)

“Blue Notes” dropped October 28, 2016 as the eighth track on Meek Mill’s DC4 (Dreamchasers 4) mixtape, released through Maybach Music Group, Dream Chasers, and Atlantic Records — arriving as Meek’s most emotionally raw record in years, right when the public needed to hear him at his most honest after a brutal stretch that included the Drake beef and Nicki breakup headlines dominating his name.  Produced by Butterbeats, the beat is built on a heavy soul sample from British guitarist Snowy White’s 1996 “Midnight Blues” — slow, mournful, and drenched in guitar — a contrast to the hard trap Meek typically runs on, giving the record a cinematic weight that matched the introspective bars.  The title itself references the blue 3-D security strip on the 2013 series $100 bills, Meek essentially using the color of money as a metaphor for the grief, paranoia, and pressure that comes with it.

Directed by Will Ngo — the third video Meek dropped in a single week during the DC4 rollout — the visual keeps it stripped and grounded: a dimly lit parking lot, Meek and his day ones counting stacks, shooting dice, burning a Benjamin onscreen as he raps about the friends who never made it out to see the bag.  The video now sits at over 58 million YouTube views, making it one of his most-watched visuals, and DC4 itself debuted at No. 2 on the iTunes Albums chart.
