‘Work’ Rihanna ft. Drake (2016)

“Work” dropped January 27, 2016, as the lead single from Rihanna’s eighth studio album Anti, released through Westbury Road and Roc Nation — and it became her 14th Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, sitting at the top for nine consecutive weeks before being bumped by Desiigner’s “Panda.” Produced by Boi-1da, Sevn Thomas, Allen Ritter, and Noah “40” Shebib — with writing credits for Rihanna, Drake, and PartyNextDoor — the track is built on a sparse, hypnotic dancehall beat where Rihanna’s Barbadian patois flows into something you can’t quite place but can’t stop replaying. Drake’s verse is understated on purpose, stepping back to let Rihanna carry the energy, and the chemistry worked because this was their third collab following “What’s My Name?” (2010) and “Take Care” (2011) — two people who knew exactly how to orbit each other on a record.

Two videos dropped simultaneously on February 22, 2016, both directed separately — Director X shot the club scene with Rihanna in a bob and mesh dress dancing through a packed Caribbean-style party, while Tim Erem filmed the more intimate version of the two alone in a room, making it feel like two different moods of the same night. The video shoot for the Director X version was filmed at the Real Jerk restaurant in Toronto, intentionally styled to look like a West Indian neighborhood. Now 6x platinum and ranked among Spotify’s most-streamed songs of all time, “Work” still holds up as the record that proved Anti was worth the wait.
