‘Love Lockdown’ Kanye West (2008)

“Love Lockdown” is the groundbreaking lead single from Kanye West’s fourth studio album, 808s & Heartbreak, released on September 18, 2008.  Produced by West and Jeff Bhasker, the song marked a radical departure from traditional hip-hop, featuring heavy use of Auto-Tune, minimalist Roland TR-808 drumbeats, and bombastic Taiko djembe drums.  West famously re-recorded the track after receiving negative feedback on an early version shared on his blog, opting for a more refined, “heartbreak” style that focused on the sound of a literal heartbeat.

The single was a massive commercial success, debuting at number three on the Billboard Hot 100—West’s highest debut at the time—and has since been certified 4× Platinum by the RIAA.  Its minimalist production and emotional vulnerability are credited with paving the way for the “emo-rap” and “sad boy” aesthetics later adopted by artists like Drake and Kid Cudi.
