‘Regulate’ Warren G ft. Nate Dogg (1994)

“Regulate” is the iconic debut single by American rappers Warren G and Nate Dogg, released on April 28, 1994.  Originally appearing on the soundtrack for the film Above the Rim, the track later served as the lead single for Warren G’s debut album, Regulate… G Funk Era.  The song is widely considered a cornerstone of the West Coast “G-Funk” subgenre, blending smooth, melodic production with gritty, street-oriented storytelling.

The track was produced by Warren G and is built around a distinctive four-bar sample of Michael McDonald’s 1982 hit “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near).” It also features an iconic spoken-word intro sampled from the 1988 film Young Guns, which establishes the “Regulators” theme.  The lyrics follow a semi-autobiographical narrative of a night in Long Beach, California, where Warren G is nearly robbed during a dice game before Nate Dogg intervenes to “regulate” the situation.
