‘Smile’ G-Unit (2003)

“Smile” is the fourth and final single from G‑Unit’s debut studio album, Beg for Mercy, released on April 8, 2004, through G‑Unit Records and Interscope Records. While the album was officially released on November 14, 2003, the track gained significant traction as a standalone single due to its soulful production and introspective lyrical themes. At the time of its release, G‑Unit consisted of 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, and Young Buck, as group member Tony Yayo was serving a prison sentence.

The record was produced by No I.D. (Ernest Wilson) and is built around a prominent sample of “I Too Am Wanting,” as performed by Syreeta Wright. Writing credits for the track are assigned to Lloyd Polite (Lloyd Banks), Curtis Jackson (50 Cent), and Ernest Wilson. The song is essentially a Lloyd Banks solo performance, with 50 Cent providing background vocals on the refrain and an introductory spoken section. Its melodic, relationship-focused direction marked a departure from the aggressive, street‑oriented sound found elsewhere on the Beg for Mercy album.
