‘Hustler Musik’ Lil Wayne (2005)

“Hustler Musik” is a foundational single by Lil Wayne from his fifth studio album, Tha Carter II, which was released on December 6, 2005. The song was officially issued as the album’s second single on January 10, 2006, through Cash Money, Young Money, and Universal Records. It is widely regarded as one of Lil Wayne’s most significant solo efforts, with the artist himself stating it is among his personal favorite recordings.

The record was written by Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. and produced by the duo T-Mix and Batman. Sonically, “Hustler Musik” is a soulful, melodic mid‑tempo track that focuses on the internal discipline and external pressures of life in the street, balancing vulnerability with a confident flow. The track performed well on urban radio formats, peaking at number 26 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 16 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. It eventually reached number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA for both digital sales and as a mastertone.

The official music video, which was shot in New York City, was directed by Benny Boom and released in 2006. The visual is unique for being a split feature, with the first half presenting “Hustler Musik” in color and the second half shifting to a black‑and‑white performance of “Money on My Mind,” another track from Tha Carter II. The video features scenes of Lil Wayne navigating the city, emphasizing the song’s theme of constant movement and the “hustler” lifestyle.

A remix of the song exists that samples Anita Baker’s 1983 track “Mystery,” though the original version remains the definitive pillar of Wayne’s mid‑2000s catalog. The song’s enduring legacy is often cited in retrospectives of Tha Carter II as the point where Lil Wayne successfully transitioned into the “best rapper alive” conversation by pairing high-level lyricism with genuine emotional weight.
