‘You’ Lloyd ft. Lil Wayne (2006)

“You” is the lead single from Lloyd’s second studio album, Street Love, released on October 23, 2006, through The Inc., Sho’nuff, and Universal Records.  The track was recorded in the basement of its producers, Big Reese and Jasper Cameron, and was famously leaked by Lloyd himself to an Atlanta radio station to generate momentum for his sophomore era.

The song was written by Lloyd Polite, Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. (Lil Wayne), Jasper Cameron, Gary Kemp, and Maurice Sinclair.  It features a prominent interpolation of the 1983 song “True” by Spandau Ballet, which provided the smooth, melodic foundation for Lloyd’s vocals and Lil Wayne’s guest verse.  Originally, the track featured Atlanta rapper Tango Redd, but he was replaced by Lil Wayne for the official commercial release.

Commercially, “You” reached its peak at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 17, 2007, marking Lloyd’s first and Lil Wayne’s second top-ten hit on that chart.  It also reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, becoming the first number-one single for both artists on that specific format.  The single has since been certified 4× Platinum by the RIAA, reflecting sales and streaming units exceeding four million in the United States.

The official music video was directed by Fat Cats and features D. Woods, a former member of the girl group Danity Kane, alongside Amanda Saintana Ceus.  The video achieved significant success on BET’s 106 & Park, where it spent 65 days on the countdown and 34 of those days at the number one spot, eventually earning induction into the show’s Video Hall of Fame.  An official remix titled “I Want You (Remix)” was also released, featuring new verses from Lloyd and guest appearances from Nas and André 3000.
