‘Make It Rain’ Fat Joe ft. Lil Wayne (2006)

“Make It Rain” is a prominent hip‑hop single by Fat Joe featuring Lil Wayne, released on October 13, 2006, as the lead single for Fat Joe’s seventh studio album, Me, Myself & I. The album was subsequently released on November 14, 2006, through the labels Terror Squad Entertainment, EMI, and Virgin Records. This record served as a significant commercial success for both artists during a period of transition in mainstream hip‑hop.

The song was written by Joseph Cartagena (Fat Joe), Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. (Lil Wayne), and Scott Storch, who also served as the record’s primary producer. The production was inspired by Fat Joe’s experiences during a tour stop in Memphis, where he decided to create a club anthem centered on the concept of throwing money. Although Fat Joe originally wrote the hook himself, record executive Irv Gotti suggested recruiting Lil Wayne to provide the southern vocal presence that defined the final version of the chorus.

On the Billboard charts, “Make It Rain” reached its peak position of number 13 on the Hot 100 on February 17, 2007. The single achieved commercial certification by earning a gold single award and a platinum mastertone award from the RIAA in May 2007. It also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.

The official music video was directed by Chris Robinson and included appearances by Scott Storch, DJ Khaled, Trina, and Fonzworth Bentley. A remix of the track was later released in 2007 featuring a larger ensemble including T.I., R. Kelly, Rick Ross, Ace Mac, and Birdman, accompanied by a video directed by R. Malcolm Jones. The song is widely recognized for its influence on the “money‑throwing” club anthem subgenre within mainstream hip‑hop.
