Study Abroad Spotlight: Spiridoula (Iris) Gkini ’27 — Milan 🇮🇹

Meet Iris, an economics major and education minor who is studying abroad this semester in Milan.

Originally from Greece, Iris grew up in New York and now calls Texas home. She always dreamed of studying abroad as a way to explore new cultures, meet people from around the world, and challenge herself.

That dream led her to the IES Abroad Milan Business Studies program, where she also has the opportunity to study at Bocconi University while living in a city known for its fashion, history, culture, and incredible food.

This semester, Iris is taking courses like The Political Economy and European Integration, Large Models for Market Research, and Energy & Environmental Economics and Policy. A typical day starts with a morning walk through central Milan, followed by browsing shops and enjoying cannoli.

Afternoons are spent in class, evenings are dedicated to researching school performance using education and economics data, and nights often end by exploring the city with new friends.

Her favorite part of the experience so far has been meeting people from all over the world, along with discovering amazing food.

Iris loves how Milan blends tradition with modern life, from centuries-old buildings to stylish cafés. Even in a busy city, people still take time to connect over meals or a quick ristretto.

Her advice to Trinity students considering studying abroad? “Do it. The confidence and experiences you gain are truly once-in-a-lifetime.”
