On a chilly morning, Chuck Page, 71, stands in a T-shirt and gray-brimmed hat in the back of the South Side ice cream shop where he has spent decades of his life.

There, in black-and-white photos affixed to the building, is his family history — stretching back more than a century in a history that parallels Pittsburgh’s own.

Page’s — originally Page Dairy Mart (pagesdairymart)— opened in 1951 and launched its 75th season this month. The seasonal business, open from March to October, has long been more than an ice cream stand. Its history tracks the arc of the city around it, a history that has endured floods, explosions, declining steel mills and a worldwide pandemic.

But key in Page’s particular history is Chuck’s grandfather, who decided to turn a gas station into a soft-serve ice cream stand.
