To every Persian I meet, the first question I ask is “Have you been to Sweet Lili’s Bakery?” ❤️

This time last year, for Nowruz, I wanted my doctor’s office to know I appreciate them. So the day before my appointment, I looked up “Best Persian bakery near me.” I found sweetlilisbakery in Laguna Hills. I called and said, “Tomorrow I’d like to pick up a box. I don’t know what to order, but I want Dr. Ashtari’s office to know I love them, so anything you choose is perfect.” 

I walked in the next day, and met Shohreh. It was an instant soul love. Shohreh ran to hug me as if we had always known each other. She told me how beautiful I was and said, “You’re Persian.” I laughed and said, “People always think that but I’m not.” She grabbed my shoulders, and said, “No. You’re Persian.” I laughed again and said, “I’m actually Sicilian and Argentinian.” And she said again, “No. I said you are Persian.” So I said… “Okay. I’m Persian.”

From that moment on, Shohreh became my adoptive Maman. She renamed me from Meghan to Mozhdeh for being her “good news.” It started as me wanting to show appreciation to my doctor’s office… But what I got back was something I didn’t know I needed. 

Every time I see Shohreh, I am loved on so loudly, I leave with my hands full of fresh baked sweets she insists I take, but more than that, I leave with my heart just as full. And I realized why it felt so familiar. My Dad loved me like that. He went out of his way to celebrate me. That was my normal, I didn’t know what my life would feel like… Or even who I was without it. Grief is the price we pay for love… But sometimes, grief sends you angels along the way who speak to your soul, the way your loved one once did.

When you walk into Sweet Lili’s Bakery, you’ll arrive as a stranger, but you leave as a friend. And in my case… as a Mozhdeh 🥰

With my birthday a few weeks away nothing would make me happier than to see the bakery supported, especially during a time when their community needs extra love. I recommend the Shirini Danmarki (Danish cookie) 🥮 And if you too are blessed to have Persians in your life, picking up a box is a thoughtful way you can show your love ❤️
