In one of the most infamously tense and defensive finals in tournament history, the deadlock was finally broken in the 85th minute. Following a foul by Roberto Sensini on Rudi Völler, West Germany was awarded a penalty. 
Despite Lothar Matthäus being the designated taker, Andreas Brehme stepped up to face Sergio Goycochea, who had been exceptional at saving penalties throughout the knockout stages. Brehme, naturally left-footed but famously ambidextrous, struck a precise low shot with his right foot into the bottom left corner.
