What I Witnessed in a Sydney Market Left Me Thinking…

During my weekly grocery run in Sydney, I unexpectedly walked into a powerful cultural moment. A traditional Chinese Lion Dance was being performed right inside the market.

At first, it looked like a colorful celebration. But the more I observed, the more I realized it carries over 1000 years of history and symbolism.

The Lion Dance is performed during Lunar New Year to drive away negative energy and invite prosperity. The lion’s blinking eyes symbolize awareness. The mirror on its forehead reflects away bad energy. The red and green colors represent protection, growth, and renewal.

One ritual that stood out was the lettuce hanging high on a stick. This is called Cai Qing, which means plucking the greens. In Cantonese, lettuce sounds similar to the word for wealth. The lion must leap high to grab it, symbolizing that prosperity requires effort. When the lion scatters the leaves back into the crowd, it represents shared blessings. Wealth is meant to circulate, not stay in one place.

Even the drum has meaning. It controls the lion’s movement. Every bow, jump, and playful gesture follows the rhythm. Nothing is random. Everything is intentional.

Watching this in a Sydney marketplace felt powerful. An ancient tradition carried across continents. Culture preserved far from home. Communities blessing their livelihood at the start of a new year.

As someone from India, it reminded me of Theyyam in Kerala. Different cultures, different forms, but the same human desire for renewal, protection, and prosperity.
