George Weah 'Coast To Coast' AC Milan 4-1 Verona. 1996
The Run: In the 87th minute, with Verona pushing for an equalizer, Weah collected a cleared Verona corner kick inside his own penalty box.
The Distance: He carried the ball approximately 90 meters.
The Time: The run took approximately 14 seconds.
The Opposition: He outpaced two Verona midfielders immediately, then split two defenders (branding them with a mix of pace and raw power) near the halfway line. Inside the box, he kept his cool to slot the ball past goalkeeper Attilio Gregori.
The Stat: It is widely cited as one of the few true "box-to-box" goals in top-flight history where a player dribbled the entire length of the pitch without passing.
The Drama
The Reigning King: George Weah entered this season as the reigning Ballon d'Or winner (1995), the first non-European to win the award. This goal was seen as the ultimate validation of his title as the world's best player at that moment.
The "False Dawn": This was the opening match of the 1996/97 season. Milan were the defending champions (having won the Scudetto in 95/96 under Fabio Capello). The emphatic 4-1 win, capped by this wonder goal, led fans to believe another dominant era was beginning under new manager Óscar Tabárez.

Overall Effect on Season (1996-97)
A Season of Collapse: Despite this electrifying start, the season was a disaster. The "False Dawn" of the Verona match quickly faded. Milan struggled to adapt to life after Fabio Capello.
Managerial Chaos: Óscar Tabárez was sacked by December. The legendary Arrigo Sacchi returned as caretaker but could not salvage the ship.
The Finish: AC Milan finished 11th in Serie A, their worst finish of the Silvio Berlusconi era up to that point. They failed to qualify for European competition entirely. Weah's goal remains the solitary bright highlight in an otherwise dark year for the club.
Match Stats:
