While the world debates tariffs and trade walls at Davos, Gita Gopinath quietly dropped a far heavier truth: for India, pollution is the bigger economic threat — not any external tax or sanction.

She cited long-standing estimates — around 1.7 million lives lost every year to air pollution (≈18% of total deaths), numbers that echo World Bank 2019 findings and have been reinforced by more recent Lancet reports showing the crisis only deepening.

It’s sobering. 
We chase headlines about global rankings and “Vishwaguru” moments, yet breathe air that quietly shortens millions of lives, slashes productivity, burdens hospitals, and quietly chips away at the very growth story we celebrate.

This isn’t about blaming one party or another — every government since the 90s has watched the haze thicken while clean-air actions remained patchy and under-funded compared to the scale.

The real question we should ask ourselves: 
Are we still treating clean air as an “environmental” side issue… or finally accepting it as the foundational economic & human priority it actually is?

Progress is happening in pockets — city funds, electric vehicle push, stubble management pilots — but the pace feels painfully slow against the numbers.

Maybe the mirror Gita held up in Davos is one we all need to look into a little longer. 
Our children deserve clearer skies than the ones we’re leaving them.
