You just can’t replace the idea.

Dan Flavin used off-the-shelf fluorescent light tubes — the kind you’d find in offices or hardware stores — and turned them into museum-collected works selling for millions.

The tubes burn out.
They get replaced.
Nothing about the materials is rare.

What collectors actually bought was a certificate, an instruction, and the legal right to recreate the work exactly as intended.

No object to fetishise.
No brushwork to admire.
Just authorship — and a room that suddenly feels different.

If art isn’t about craftsmanship, permanence, or materials…
what exactly are collectors paying for?

Genius?
