In 1981, a 21 year old black graffiti artist known by the tag of SAMO suddenly broke into the gallery world, self-crowned, fully formed, raw, daring and confident, with a totally unique style that defined the energy of New York downtown’s life in the early eighties. Basquiat had been included in ‘New York / New Wave’ at PS.1, a vision of young artists working in the city curated by Diego Cortez. It was in this exhibition that ‘Untitled’, 1981 was first shown and it was immediately understood by maestro gallerist Bruno Bischofberger as the work of a genius. Basquiat was on the way to international stardom.

‘Untitled’, 1981’ captures the urgent immediacy of Basquiat’s creative language; he utilizes oil, spray, and oil stick, and a bit of collage at hand, to describe an abstracted urban landscape with his own self portrait like an invisible Man in the grid of the street.
