Ghost in the Shell takes the form of a traditional Chinese scholar rock, a microcosm of landscape and a meditative object that bridges nature and civilisation. It is made from Financial Times newspapers, compressed into rock-like forms and placed on an inverted cloud base that mirrors the rock itself, suspending between earth and heaven. The surface is sanded back so that layers of text emerge like geological strata, evoking an illusion of deep time, a landscape of information shaped by the accelerating flows of global capital that produce both utopia and dystopia.  In the spirit of Ghost in the Shell, this work asks what remains of the human ghost within the systems that define our age. The shell can be seen as the structure of capitalism and technology, the vast apparatus that mediates experience, perception, and identity. The ghost is the residue of consciousness that persists within it, an echo of subjectivity flickering through circuits of data and desire. Yet the question extends further: is there also a ghost within the system itself, an unconscious logic or spectral agency that moves beyond human control?  The sculpture becomes a meditation on what Mark Fisher called the hauntological condition, the sense of being trapped in the ruins of lost futures, where the past persists as a phantom within the present. By merging the language of ancient scholar rocks with financial newsprint, Ghost in the Shell collapse’s temporal boundaries, where history, technology, and myth coexist in the same loop. It is both relic and prophecy, a site of contemplation in which the ghosts of civilisation continue to dream through the shells of capital and code. In this liminal zone between nature and digital, I question where our human nature resides in the digital age, and what form the ghost of our future might take.
