Thanks to alminerech for showing my 3D printed porcelain sculpture in its first Ceramic art fair. 

This work comes from a long process of researching and working with a state of the art ceramic company specialising in 3D printing in porcelain inside of Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. This is the first showing of their technology in an art fair and was first shown in my solo show with Almine Rech in Shanghai.

Navigating the intersection of Chinese and British cultures, my work with 3D-printed porcelain scholar rocks embodies a philosophical exploration of creation, transformation, and cultural identity. By reinterpreting ancient myths of humanity’s formation from clay through the lens of modern technology, I bridge the past and present, tradition and innovation, and the duality of my cultural heritage. This process reflects a deeper inquiry into how materiality, technology, and cultural synthesis shape our understanding of identity and existence, revealing that we are all part of a continuous cycle of creation and re-creation, grounded in both the earth, ancestral roots and the evolving contexts of our modern lives.

In my scholar rock sculptures, I use 3D-printed porcelain technology to bring these ancient themes into a contemporary and culturally nuanced context. Scholar rocks, or gongshi, have long been revered in Chinese culture as objects of contemplation, representing the harmony between nature and artifice. Traditionally, these rocks were valued for their naturally occurring shapes, which evoke landscapes or mountainous forms, serving as microcosms of the larger natural world. Here however they have been made with state of the art technology and its shape has been enhanced digitally to show its polygon surfaces in order to suggest a microcosm of a datascape, the contemporary landscapes we all exist. They are meditative focal points between nature and civilisation.
