One day my workout partner asked me,
“What did prison teach you the most?”

I said it taught me how to be a man.

Not how to fight.
Not how to act tough.

It taught me that nobody is coming to save you.

When you’re locked up, you sit with your decisions.
You sit with the consequences.
And you realize there is no bailout.

Nobody can do your time for you.
Nobody can take away your pain.
Nobody can fix your situation.

You endure it.

Yardville was 25 and under. Young dudes trying to prove something every day. If you didn’t stand up for yourself, you’d become prey.

So I stood up for myself.

I fought when I had to.
I took hits.
I gave hits.

But what stuck with me wasn’t the fights.

It was the realization that everything in my life — good or bad — was on me.

That’s what being a man is.

Owning your decisions.
Owning your consequences.
Owning your future.

Once I understood that nobody was coming to save me,
I stopped waiting.
