January 2020.
The first time I ever met my son.🫶🏻

I flew down with my dad the moment I maxed out parole. We took him to the beach and had the best day. But the moment that stays with me forever was before all of that.

He was still asleep in his car seat.
When he opened his eyes, I was sitting on the couch in front of him.

He just stared at me. Curious. Unsure.
The only way he knew me before that was through pictures and a few FaceTimes I managed to sneak while I was in a halfway house. He was only about six months old — I didn’t even know if he really remembered me.

The first thing that needed to be done?
A diaper change.💩

I jumped right in.
I’d never changed a diaper a day in my life, but I wasn’t about to hesitate. I needed a little coaching, but I did it. I wanted to step up immediately.

Truth is, while I was locked up, I read Fatherhood for Dummies.
Other inmates laughed at me. I didn’t care. I wanted to be ready. I wanted to be a good dad.

What made it even better — the book was the Australian version.🇬🇧
So diapers were called “nappies” and strollers were “buggies.” I was confused half the time, laughing the other half, but I read every page.

That last bid I did was only 13 months — but it felt like the longest.
My son’s mom was four months pregnant when I violated parole and got sent back. While I was inside, she moved to Florida.

The moment I was done with parole, I flew down to meet my son.
Even though her and I didn’t work out, being in his life was non-negotiable.

I didn’t have much going for me back in Jersey anyway, so I took a leap of faith and moved to Florida.

And somehow… everything worked out better than I could’ve ever imagined. 🖤
