The Hongcheon Ice Fishing Festival in South Korea is one of the country’s most exciting and traditional winter experiences. It takes place every year on the frozen Hongcheon River, where thousands of visitors sit on the ice, drill a small hole, and patiently try to catch trout.

I had the chance to experience this firsthand, and while it seemed easy at first, I quickly realized that it requires a lot of patience and preparation. The cold is intense, so wearing thermal clothing, gloves, and waterproof boots is essential. Plus, the wait can be long since the fish don’t always bite right away, making it a true test of endurance.

However, the thrill of finally catching a trout makes it all worthwhile. Many festivals, including the one in Hongcheon, allow you to cook your catch on-site or enjoy other activities like ice skating and sledding.

If you plan to go, be prepared for the cold—and, most importantly, for a test of patience. But in the end, the satisfaction of ice fishing at such a traditional festival makes the experience unforgettable.
