Ultra training is a long game. It takes patience, focus, and time, not panic mileage or last-minute heroics. The goal is to arrive at the start line prepared, confident, and healthy, not broken before the race even begins.

As a rough guideline, most runners need
• 50 km around 4 to 6 months of consistent training
• 70 km around 6 to 8 months
• 100 km around 9 to 12 months
• 160 km anywhere from 12 to 18 months or more

That time is not just about distance. It is about building gradually, long runs, back-to-back days, strength work, vertical gain, fueling practice, and learning how your body reacts when tired.

Take all of this with a grain of salt. Every ultra is different. Course profile, elevation gain, weather, heat or cold, altitude, terrain, cut-offs, your running background, injury history, recovery, sleep, nutrition, and even life stress all play a role in shaping your training plan.

Cramming for an ultra at short notice might be doable, but it is rarely smart. Unless your goal is simply to suffer and survive the finish, it is not the ideal approach.

Train with intent. Respect the process. Strong beats rushed every time.
