The donor conception conversation is loud right now. And for good reason. Many adults conceived via donor sperm are discovering their origins through 23andMe or Ancestry years—sometimes decades—later. They feel betrayed. They’re angry. They want change.

And they deserve to be heard.

But what’s missing from the conversation is perspective.

Most of these stories come from hetero couples with male factor infertility who never planned to tell their children. It was a different time. There was shame. There were secrets. The trauma that some DCC are navigating today is real—but it often stems from the lie, not the biology.

Today, over 50% of families using donor sperm are LGBTQIA+. There is no hiding. No shame. Our children grow up knowing they are wanted, loved, and celebrated from the very beginning. And with their conception story shared from a place of truth in their early years.

We do need family limits. We do need better education. We do need transparency.

But we also need nuance.

Because if we regulate too hard, we erase the ability for families like mine to grow. 10-family caps and mandatory medical updates every 3 years might sound fair, but they’ll gut the entire donor sperm system. Who will still donate?

And what about donors? What about recipient parents? What about the DCC who aren’t angry—but curious? Hopeful? Ready to embrace a new kind of extended family?

Take my own story— my own BioSibs. Some found out their story late in life, and yes—some were shocked, some were sad, and some had healing to do. But they weren’t destroyed. They were open.

Being donor conceived doesn’t have to be a tragedy. It can be a beginning.

We need to stop letting the most extreme stories dominate the narrative. Not every DCC is traumatized. Not every donor story ends in grief.

Let’s hold space for all the truths. But let’s not shame families—especially LGBTQ+ families—out of the chance to build a future.

You are the author of your life. You choose the language. Make it one worth celebrating.
