The taste of Friuli 😋🇮🇹🍽️

Where Italy meets the mountains (and melts into flavor). And this is everything I ate. Well .. almost! 🥂

When it comes to food, iosonofriuliveneziagiulia is not your typical Italian postcard. It’s a borderland where the Alps 🏔️, the Adriatic 🌊, and centuries of cultures have cooked together, literally.

Here, you’re only a few minutes from Slovenia 🇸🇮, and you can taste it. Flavors, recipes, and accents blend seamlessly, a delicious reminder that borders on a map don’t stop what happens in a kitchen.

You won’t find cliché pizza-and-pasta menus here. Instead, you’ll find a cuisine that whispers comfort🧣, shaped by mountain air, forest soil, and old family kitchens.

🥔 Frico — the soul of Friuli. Just delicious!!! A golden crisp of melted Montasio cheese and potatoes, half creamy, half crunchy, always irresistible.

🍖 Prosciutto di San Daniele — so soft and flavorful. Cured in a microclimate between sea and mountain breeze, softer and sweeter than Parma’s.

🥩 The meats — hearty and humble. From musetto (pork sausage with polenta) to slow-cooked stinco di maiale, paprika-rich goulash, and wild game like venison or boar — dishes that echo Friuli’s Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian heritage.

🍲 Polenta — rich, buttery, and omnipresent, a warm canvas for mushrooms 🍄 or tender stews.

🥟 Cjarsons — filled pasta with herbs, raisins, or cinnamon, a sweet-savory nod to the region’s border-crossing imagination.

🐟 Baccalà and seafood stews — from the coastal towns near Trieste add a taste of the Adriatic, balancing the alpine heart with sea breeze. 🌊

🧀 Cheese & vinegar — Beyond Montasio, you’ll find smoked ricotta and alpine cheeses aged in caves. Even the balsamic vinegar is artisanal, small-batch, aromatic, brightening the rich mountain dishes.

Pair them with Friulano or Ribolla Gialla orange wines 🍊, and you’ll understand why this region doesn’t just cook, it remembers. And yes my favourite dish was ..frico 💞!

What would you try first? 🫢 fvglive
