Bordeaux is hitting the reset button. 🍷

And no this isn’t a small adjustment. It’s the biggest structural shift the region has seen in decades.

📉 Wine consumption in France keeps falling.
📦 Low-priced red Bordeaux is piling up in cellars.
💸 1 in 3 growers in the Gironde is facing serious financial pressure.

Enter the grubbing-up scheme. France has approved the removal of up to 9,500 hectares: around 9% of all Bordeaux vineyards, originally counted around 108,000 hectares of vines. As of July 2024, more than 3,000 hectares have already been uprooted. If you have updates plz share.

Why 🤔?

Because a significant part of Bordeaux is no longer economically viable. Low demand, higher production costs, structural oversupply, and global competition have made generic red Bordeaux unsustainable.

Meanwhile, the top terroirs remain strong. Pauillac, Margaux, St-Julien — with vineyard values reaching up to €4.5M/ha — are unaffected. 💥

The real issue lies in the entry-level reds, not the region’s iconic estates. The goal is clear: A healthier, more balanced, more future-proof Bordeaux. This isn’t a panic reaction. It’s a strategic reset. 👌
