The strength of the Roman Empire came not with steak but with ancient grains and plants.

Research from Bern and Vienna shows that Roman gladiators, the fiercest fighters of their day, thrived mostly on a plant-based diet. Stable isotope and trace element analysis of bones excavated from Ephesus reveal meals centered around barley, wheat, and legumes, with little animal protein evidence. Gladiators stood apart due to their high strontium-to-calcium bone content, a marker researchers traced back to their unique ritual: drinking a tonic made from plant ashes after intense training or combat. This mineral-rich ash drink, much like our modern-day sports supplements, helped fortify their bones and speed recovery. Ancient sources even dubbed gladiators “hordearii”—barley eaters—echoing their plant-powered regimen⚔️

🌱Turns out raw plant power, not meat, built endurance, resilience, and iconic legends of Rome!
