Why Freedivers Might Lose Fat Faster”

There’s no single answer and no direct study on fat loss from freediving yet.
But there are several interesting possibilities that could explain why many freedivers myself included lose fat faster than in other sports.

⸻

💨 1️⃣ Oxygen Use & Hypoxia

When sugar and oxygen drops, the body may shift from burning sugar to burning fat a slower but more efficient fuel.
Over time, this could improve fat oxidation even at rest. It’s possible that free diver become more efficient at burning fat .
📖 Huynh et al., J Mol Cell Biol 2024; Kjeld et al., PLoS ONE 2018

⸻

❄️ 2️⃣ Cold Water Exposure

Cold water removes heat 25× faster than air.
To compensate, the body activates brown fat, burning stored fat to maintain core temperature.
📖 van der Lans et al., J Clin Invest 2013

⸻

🧘 3️⃣ Stress & Hormones

Freediving often lowers cortisol and appetite helping the body stay in a fat-burning state longer after diving.
📖 Epel et al., Psychoneuroendocrinology 2001

⸻

🌊 4️⃣ Pressure & Circulation

The mammalian dive reflex redirects blood flow, protecting vital organs and improving oxygen efficiency a unique physiological workout.
📖 Lindholm & Lundgren, J Appl Physiol 2008

⸻

🌬️ 5️⃣ Surface Reoxygenation (After the Dive)

When you resurface, your body goes through a massive oxygen intake phase.
This recovery called EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) helps clear CO₂ and lactate and boosts metabolism for hours after diving.
That after-dive “oxygen debt repayment” may also increase fat oxidation during recovery.

📖 Gaesser & Brooks, Med Sci Sports Exerc, 1984 — EPOC and fat metabolism

⸻

Each of these mechanisms alone can influence metabolism but freediving combines them all:
hypoxia, cold, calm, pressure, and recovery.

I’m not claiming an absolute truth just sharing 20 years of experience and patterns I’ve seen over and over.
Freediving is a unique environment for the human body, and it deserves much more research. 🌊
