Why you didn’t improve in your second HYROX race

Most athletes finish their first HYROX and immediately attack the stations they struggled with. More sleds. More wall balls. More burpees.

That feels logical.
It’s usually the wrong move.

What actually limited your race was not one station.
It was your ability to recover and run well after every station.

Without a bigger aerobic engine, fixing individual stations barely moves the needle. You might be a little faster once, but your runs still slow down and the back half still falls apart.

Here’s how to actually improve for your next race.

1. Build aerobic capacity first
Run more. Add weekly mileage gradually. Spend time in Zone 2 so your heart rate recovers faster between efforts.

2. Add longer efforts
HYROX lasts 75 to 100 minutes. Your training should include longer runs and aerobic sessions that teach you to stay controlled for extended periods.

3. Practice compromised running
Run immediately after ergs or strength work so your body learns to re settle and hold pace under fatigue.

4. Maintain strength, don’t chase fatigue
You don’t need more brutal workouts. You need strength that transfers without crushing your runs.

Fix the engine and everything improves.
The stations feel easier.
The runs get faster.
The race finally comes together.

That’s how second races turn into breakthroughs.
