The Threat he Posed:

The Sahel Connection: If Saif had won the presidency, he wouldn’t have just joined the Sahel Alliance (Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso)—he would have bankrolled them.

Strategic Access: He would have given those landlocked states access to the Mediterranean, helping Russia and China bypass Western gatekeepers.
