Capturing a natural landscape in CGI is always a difficult challenge, but one that can really help sharpen your eye.

Lighting setup:
1. Day rig to capture the falloff.
2. Infinite light to increase the shadow depth.
3. A Spot light with a gobo attached to create a natural imbalance of shadows and highlights.

I used #particles to create the sand blowing in the wind and a basic high resolution VDB for the clouds.
