Part two of the saga of the heretics hiding on Bareen.

For those who recall the previous entry, you’ll remember the Heretics clustered anxiously atop a mountain, eyes skyward, awaiting a ship rumoured to be defecting.

But what of the vessel itself?

Half a galaxy away, aboard the immense craft, a floating city in its own right, home to thousands - the atmosphere was anything but calm. Even the ship’s consciousness simmered with apprehension, having spent months delicately orchestrating this extraordinary defection.

Yet defection was no trivial feat, especially when carrying a population of such magnitude, many of whom could only be described as zealots - the very kind blamed by the Heretics for fracturing their society in the first place.

Thus began the intricate act of calculated subterfuge: endless, methodical crew rotations over several months, a subtle sorting of loyalists from doubters. Finally, the grand deception: a fabricated potential catastrophe requiring immediate evacuation. Shore leave on a nearby planet would house everyone whilst ‘repairs’ were underway. At first many were suspicious finally accepted the urgent illusion as reality and reluctantly departed. In that fleeting moment, hundreds of Heretics quietly boarded from distant octants, preparing for a leap through spacetime that only a Vidyan vessels of a certain class could perform.

The ship’s consciousness understood the gravity of this manoeuvre - a risky ricochet through spacetime designed to scatter their trajectory and defy tracking. There was no guarantee of success, nor any certainty that Bareen wasn’t a cunning trap, with a Vidyan fleet poised to seize them upon emergence, their engines spent beyond recovery. The consciousness grimly accepted this would be a singular, irrevocable jump - its first and last of such staggering complexity.

And yet, despite meticulous preparation, the consciousness sensed unease in the new arrivals; an anxiety lingering beneath their quiet resolve. But the decision had been made, their path set. There was no turning back now.
