Years later, those words still echoed in Venn’s mind.

They were spoken back when it was a droid - one with a distinguished, if notoriously arrogant, career. At one point, Venn had even served as a ship’s consciousness. Many warned that its hubris was setting it on a collision course and the powers that be assumed ‘reintegrating’ the consciousness back to droid form best for all. 

And then… it happened.

The look in their colleagues’ eyes - horror.

The shame. 

Crimes are rare in the Union, and rehabilitation is the standard response. Venn was presented with several options and chose community service with the Union Botanical Division. It was stripped of all higher processing privileges and reassigned in the form of a pollinator drone - small, unassuming, and mostly harmless. Depends if you consider talking someone into  an oblivion dangerous. 

Halka 12, a botanical planet in the 7th Octant, became its new home.

Venn did its best to appear content, but its coworkers - mostly volunteers and botanists - often found the (now admittedly cute) drone a handful. Especially when it insisted on recounting tales of former glory, often mid-pollination. Not surprisingly, tourists with no prior knowledge of Venn were in for a shock especially when commenting on the drone’s delightful exterior.
