Part II -  Union Ship Vela: Kasparian’s Anomaly

It had been days since Mir Kasparian first logged the anomaly, and the silence gnawed at him. No word from the command deck, no acknowledgement from Relay Epsilon-4. 

Unable to let it go, he quietly conducted gravimetric sweeps during downtime, focusing on the last coordinates. There it was again -  a power signature, radiant and strange, a lattice of energies unlike anything he had encountered. It shimmered and pulsed in a way that made him question if it was synthetic?

Why was this being ignored?

He craved answers, but deeper scans would betray his curiosity to the crew. His options were collapsing by the hour as ship pulled further away.
So he chose transgression. He buried his findings in an encrypted log, wove them into the background noise of routine transmissions, and cast them outward. Message Alpha 005. A furtive signal, flung into the dark, a gamble that someone, anyone with the correct skill set, might reply. If he were caught, his path to a commission would end before it began.
Elsewhere aboard the Union ship Vela, Garcia lingered in the quiet of a service corridor, face lit by the pale glow of a senior robot’s optics.
“Nobody’s asking you to spy, Cadet,” it said, tone warm with mechanical patience. “Let us call it discretionary observation.”
Garcia narrowed his eyes as a frown raced across his forehead. The last thing he wanted to do was ‘observe’ his friend anymore than he already had.
