Soren Zayal would always be an archaeologist first, no matter what the Vidyans called him. Even before he was labeled a heretic, he and others like him had been outsiders - curiosities in a culture that had long forsaken the past in favor of the future. To most Vidyans, archaeology was an indulgence, an irrelevance. No surprise, then, that more than ten of them had joined the team that landed.

For many, embracing the past had been as much a reason for leaving as rejecting Vidyan society itself. And then there was Mahavir - its ruins stretching endlessly around them, untouched, waiting. Not just the great city but smaller ones across the continents. Even the most pious Vidyans could not deny its significance. Well, perhaps they could. But Soren and the others knew they couldn’t waste this opportunity.

So they pleaded. Three days. That was all they asked. The Heretics running the operation begrudgingly agreed. Soren and his team scattered across continents, moving quickly, documenting everything.

And now, in the quiet of the planet’s ruins, he recorded a message.

Alyona, I keep thinking how much you’d love this place.

Alyona—a friend, a lover, perhaps both—had looked at him with sadness when he announced his plans to leave. A fellow archaeologist, she had listened, silent, as he explained his reasons. Did she feel betrayed? That he had chosen to walk away from her rather than endure the suffocating weight of Vidyan politics?

And that made it all the more bitter. Here he was, in a treasure trove of everything they had once held dear, and he could not share it. All these names they had marveled at. The holo-tours they had taken through lost cities, in all their former splendour - cities that were now being erased from Vidyan history.

I miss you. And I hope… I hope you’ll understand why I made this choice.

Soren knew the chances of Alyona ever receiving the message were slim. Heretics operated in secrecy; communication was forbidden.

But this wasn’t about reaching her. It was about saying the words out loud.
