„sadašnje mesto“

i was asked to take part in a group-exhibition, curated by Kyril Elcow. 
it should take place in an old house, build 1751 , it is now a cultural centre owned and led by Arina Tshukomina. 
Its a magic place. And the little town, named Sremsko Karlovci, for 300+ years, has been a cornerstone of Serbian diplomacy, church authority, culture, education—and Bermet wine.

„the home of now“, or „the present place“ , the theme is the search for a sense of home in the present - shifting away from nostalgia toward the here and now. This exhibition is part of a project for migration and refugees from the humanitarian centre Novi Sad. 

This was my idea for the exhibition:
For me, the sense of home — wherever I go in the world, and I have been to many places — is my mother’s food.
Nostalgia hits me hard here, since she has passed away. My favorite dish of hers was *Sarma* (cabbage rolls), and it was the last meal she cooked for me before she died. All my friends used to gather in her small kitchen and enjoy her *Sarma*.

I carry this memory with me, and whenever I find *Sarma* somewhere, it reminds me of home — and of her.
The work connects this memory with the idea of an icon: something you take with you on your travels, to new places — just as I placed a small icon in her bag for her final journey, into her coffin.

The piece will be an icon painted in my own style, showing a plate with *Sarma*.
On the icon, written in Cyrillic, are the words “МАМА” (Mama) and “САРМА” (Sarma).
Also there will be the two doves, who visited my mom on her balcony every day to get some food from her. 
The icon will hang on a wall above an original tablecloth from her kitchen, fixed with nails.

So, i did it, and i have to say that i like it. And i have the feeling that it is a start of something.
